Learning Observed

Athena and Darius began to learn about Storybird when the Hickey hapu wrote the story ‘Quack the Cat’ together. Both learners were happy that Ms Wilkes made them their own accounts.  Some LH6 learners came to work with us and their buddy was LH6.

LH6 patiently helped them to login to their Storybird accounts and helped them use the program so their funny, creative ideas could become a story. Each boy used their own account for their story.  It was challenging for Athena and Darius to remember to try to use -at words in the story but they loved looking through all the pictures. It was good that LH6 helped them stay focused and they created some interesting stories with her.  LH6 helped the learners to stay on task, and together they created some wonderful creative stories which were inspired by the pictures they selected from the Storybird library.  Initially LH6 did most of the typing but all of the ideas came from the Athena and Darius. LH6 came to work with them 6 times for 25 minutes.
Athena and Darius have very unique ideas and demonstrates a growing understanding that they are writing for an audience and that the purpose is to entertain.  They used some appropriate and purposeful language features as well- such as metaphor, alliteration and rhyme.  Read the amazing stories where embedded below, by clicking on the links or by logging into Storybird.

Measurement

Learner:   Darius            Learning Coach: M Lennon           Date:   16 October 2017
Learning Area:  iDevelop - Mathematics
NZC Achievement Objectives:   Level 1 Mathematics
Measurement:
Students will create and use appropriate units and devices to measure length, area, volume and capacity, weight (mass), turn (angle), temperature, and time.
Patterns and Relationships:
Students will generalise that whole numbers can be partitioned in many ways.
Learning Observed
In a measurement unit during iDevelop Darius has been learning to identify different units of length.  He has been participating in a range of practical activities using both standard and non-standard units of measure.

Darius has demonstrated his curiosity by making estimations about the length of various objects using non-standard measures (e.g. how many giant steps to the door?), then carrying out investigations through practical activities in order to check his estimations.

During the measurement unit Darius is showing he is a capable learner by being able to use language, symbols, and text in order to measure the length of a particular object.

Darius is a connected learner, taking his previous experience with measurement and applying it to his current learning.

“The cubes are best to measure because they were all the same size so our answers will be the same.” - Darius
Next Learning Steps
  • Keep making estimations about the length of various things.
  • Begin using more standard forms of measurement

Dance Creation

Learner: Darius     Learning Coach: S Blake      Date: 11 August 2017
Learning Area: iExperience
Learning Area:  iExperience (The Arts, Dance)
NZC Achievement Objectives:   Level 1 The Arts (Dance)

  • Explore movement with a developing awareness of the dance elements of body, space, time, energy, and relationships.
  • Improvise and explore movement ideas in response to a variety of stimuli.
  • Share dance movement through informal presentation and share their thoughts and feelings in response to their own and others’ dances.
Learning Observed
During iExperience Darius has been working on creating the dance for the production.

Darius started exploring dance and movement during a taster iExperience and then chose to opt-in to the next week and begin to create the dance for the production. During these workshops he has been making connections between the song and the dance we are creating.

Darius has demonstrated his capability by remembering the dance routine and his part in it.  Darius has participated and contributed in the dance iExperience and in the production dance opt-in. He has shown his collaboration by sharing his ideas with other learners as well as listening to others share their ideas.

The production will be on stage at Ormiston Junior College on November 23rd if you would like to see the dance that Darius helped to create.

Oxygen Experiments

Learner:    Darius           Learning Coach:  M Lennon              Date: 26 May 2017
Learning Area:  iExperience
NZC Achievement Objectives:   Level 1 Science:  Nature of Science:  Investigating in Science
Students will extend their experiences and personal explanations of the natural world through exploration, play, asking questions, and discussing simple models.
Learning Observed
During iExperience Darius has been learning about the properties and uses of Oxygen.

Firstly Darius learnt that all living things need Oxygen.  He showed great capability in being able to explain what determines something that is living.  Next he participated in a range of experiments that showed the different properties of Oxygen.

Darius demonstrated great curiosity by asking lots of questions and making accurate predictions.  He also made connections with the new learning through experiments and being able to describe different processes.

During the experiments Darius managed himself while participating, making sure he was always in the right place at the right time, doing the right thing.
Evidence of learning

Next Learning Steps
  • Continue questioning the world around you.
  • Remember to predict and re-predict as you are experimenting.

iDevelop (Numeracy)

Learner: Darius   Learning Coach: Mrs Bachu     Date: 26/5/17

Learning Area: iDevelop (Numeracy)
Learning Observed

In numeracy we have been learning how to add and subtract. Darius is developing an understanding of addition and subtraction facts to twenty. He is able to solve number sentences up to twenty using materials (cubes). Darius is beginning to add and subtract by counting on and using a number line  when  solving number sentences. He is beginning to recognise that addition can be done in any order and is able to select and use materials for visual aid when necessary. Darius is able to contribute and participate well with his peers in group settings, has a positive attitude towards learning and always tries his best.
NZC Achievement Objective

  • Know groupings with five, within ten and with ten.
  • Generalise that the next counting number gives the result of adding one object to a set and that counting the number of objects in a set tells how many.
  • Know the forward and backward counting sequences of whole numbers to 100.

Next Learning Steps
Work on metal recall of number facts to twenty.
Continue to work on solving addition and subtraction missing number sentences of numbers to twenty.
Begin to apply your knowledge when problem solving.

iDevelop Making Predictions

Learner:  Darius     Learning Coach: S Blake      Date: 10 May 2017
Learning Area: iDevelop
NZC Achievement Objectives:   English Level 1; Listening, Reading, and Viewing; Structure
Students will…
  • recognise and begin to understand text structures;
  • understand that the order and organisation of words, sentences, and images contribute to meaning.
Learning Observed
This term Darius has been learning to make predictions during reading workshops.

Darius has been working to make predictions by looking at the title and the picture on the cover of the book, as well as re-predicting and revising predictions during reading.

Darius actively participated and contributed in many workshops, initially showing his capability of making predictions from the covers of shared stories.  Darius then worked collaboratively with others listening to their predictions and sharing his own with them.

After making connections and taking clues from the stories, Darius was able to confidently apply his learning in order to make predictions on a variety of stories.
Evidence of learning

Next Learning Steps
  • Try using prediction skills when watching short videos
  • Use prediction when reading iPick books at home

Mighty Machines

Learner:  Darius             Learning Coach: M Lennon            Date:   3 April 2017
Learning Area:  iDevelop
NZC Achievement Objective:  English - Level 1
Students will acquire and begin to use sources of information, processes, and strategies to identify, form, and express ideas.
Learning Observed
During iDevelop Darius has been learning about different machines and their purposes.

First Darius watched some video clips showing a range of different machines and what they can do.  Then he had a chance to discuss with his peers what the purpose of the machines were.  Darius demonstrated that he was a capable learner in this activity by confidently describing different machines and their uses.

After that Darius actively participated in an activity which saw him using Lego to build a machine for a specific purpose.  Darius demonstrated connections to his prior learning about machines by choosing appropriate pieces to build his machine.

Lastly Darius wrote a story describing his machine.  Darius demonstrated curiosity throughout this week of machine works.
