Oxygen Experiments

Learner:    Darius           Learning Coach:  M Lennon              Date: 26 May 2017
Learning Area:  iExperience
NZC Achievement Objectives:   Level 1 Science:  Nature of Science:  Investigating in Science
Students will extend their experiences and personal explanations of the natural world through exploration, play, asking questions, and discussing simple models.
Learning Observed
During iExperience Darius has been learning about the properties and uses of Oxygen.

Firstly Darius learnt that all living things need Oxygen.  He showed great capability in being able to explain what determines something that is living.  Next he participated in a range of experiments that showed the different properties of Oxygen.

Darius demonstrated great curiosity by asking lots of questions and making accurate predictions.  He also made connections with the new learning through experiments and being able to describe different processes.

During the experiments Darius managed himself while participating, making sure he was always in the right place at the right time, doing the right thing.
Evidence of learning

Next Learning Steps
  • Continue questioning the world around you.
  • Remember to predict and re-predict as you are experimenting.

iDevelop (Numeracy)

Learner: Darius   Learning Coach: Mrs Bachu     Date: 26/5/17

Learning Area: iDevelop (Numeracy)
Learning Observed

In numeracy we have been learning how to add and subtract. Darius is developing an understanding of addition and subtraction facts to twenty. He is able to solve number sentences up to twenty using materials (cubes). Darius is beginning to add and subtract by counting on and using a number line  when  solving number sentences. He is beginning to recognise that addition can be done in any order and is able to select and use materials for visual aid when necessary. Darius is able to contribute and participate well with his peers in group settings, has a positive attitude towards learning and always tries his best.
NZC Achievement Objective

  • Know groupings with five, within ten and with ten.
  • Generalise that the next counting number gives the result of adding one object to a set and that counting the number of objects in a set tells how many.
  • Know the forward and backward counting sequences of whole numbers to 100.

Next Learning Steps
Work on metal recall of number facts to twenty.
Continue to work on solving addition and subtraction missing number sentences of numbers to twenty.
Begin to apply your knowledge when problem solving.

iDevelop Making Predictions

Learner:  Darius     Learning Coach: S Blake      Date: 10 May 2017
Learning Area: iDevelop
NZC Achievement Objectives:   English Level 1; Listening, Reading, and Viewing; Structure
Students will…
  • recognise and begin to understand text structures;
  • understand that the order and organisation of words, sentences, and images contribute to meaning.
Learning Observed
This term Darius has been learning to make predictions during reading workshops.

Darius has been working to make predictions by looking at the title and the picture on the cover of the book, as well as re-predicting and revising predictions during reading.

Darius actively participated and contributed in many workshops, initially showing his capability of making predictions from the covers of shared stories.  Darius then worked collaboratively with others listening to their predictions and sharing his own with them.

After making connections and taking clues from the stories, Darius was able to confidently apply his learning in order to make predictions on a variety of stories.

Next Learning Steps
  • Try using prediction skills when watching short videos
  • Use prediction when reading iPick books at home
